As to reverence, such
an approach to education may overemphasize the importance of tradition, of
received knowledge, passivity on the part of the learner, and an uncritical
acceptance of standard knowledge and practice. Notwithstanding the potentially
transformative power of mystery, awe, and a sense of wonder, its darker possibilities
of stultifying and reifying knowledge, creating a chasm between those who possess
valued knowledge and those who do not, and restricting access to this knowledge
to an elite few as a means of wielding power over others must also be
acknowledged.
